A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. Practice meditation, offering flowers, candles, incenses or colorful things, or walking on the pagoda platform mostly as keeping the Shwedagon Pagoda at the right side, or praying, etc that Buddhists usually do. Seasonal Flowers, and Bonus Flowers in the Summer 2015

This summer is so hot and there was a hardful warning to everyone from the daily weather report. It said ultraviolet rays have now high radiation. It was dangerous if we were going outside between 11am and 3pm. But wait! There were beautiful nature beauties await us. The seasonal flowers called Kankaw (Mesua Ferrea) blooming in this month. Kankaw flowers are everywhere in the market place, and women love to buy and wear on their head. I also love to buy some Kankaw flowers, and put at our household shrine. In our Burmese custom, during the Thadingyut festival, young people brought foods, or cakes or gifts, and they offered in front of their teachers or adults, and paid respect. My grandpa was a teacher, and he received gifts, and respect from his students during the season. However he accepted gifts from his students, he preferred having being paid respect at not any gifts. His students did not satisfy what their teacher said. They wanted to bring cakes or foods, etc while they were coming to pay respect. ( Yes! I agreed! Their cakes were delicious! I did not understand why grandpa did not want to accept gifts .) (Young writers, and poets came and paid respect to my grandparents during Thadingyut season.) The Hta –ma –ne Festival (February)

It is the name given to the harvest festival at the time of the year in February, the eleventh month of the Burmese calendar. The name hta-ma-ne is given to a mixture of glutinous rice, sessamun seeds, peanuts, coconut slices, garlic slices and a generous amount of oil, etc. In fact, everything that is yielded by the harvest is put into the mixture. How the mixture is made is a separate subject. Enough to say that the hta-ma-ne party is a kind of come-one –and –come-all and take-away party. That is the true spirit of hta-ma-ne party. Everyone is invited and those not invited can come too. I received a portion of hta-ma-ne from the ‘Three Pagodas Monastery’ of our neighbor street. Book Review – ‘Quest for Peace’ by Khin Myo Chit

--> The collection of Khin Myo Chit’s articles from The Working People’s Daily newspaper in 1964 was now published from Parami publication. This is the first time publication in book form, of one of Khin Myo Chit’s masterpieces. Buddhist’s way of life, memoirs on Sunlun method of meditation, her life story in literary and in wartime, her social life included in this book, and it seemed become her own autobiography. There were 49 articles appeared, and her son, Dr.Khin Maung Win wrote the Preface for the book. It said that before the title ‘Quest for Peace’ was decided, there have been many titles. Her two admirers U Win Pe (Mya Zin), and Mrs Godwine argued between the two titles called ‘Many a House of life Hath Me’ and ‘House of Life’. But they thought those two titles should need explaination. So the simple title, ‘Quest for Peace’ was finally chosen, and the autobiography was serialized in the daily newspaper The Working People’s Daily in 1964. Here is the
