The Night She Rest In Peace; Longing for a Burmese Poet – Kyi Aye

(Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. While I was reading her poems in my younger days, I thought Omar Khayyam was reborn as our poet, Kyi ...

The Adventure of My Translating Lewis Carroll’s Masterpieces into Burmese

The Adventure of My Translating Lewis Carroll’s Masterpieces into Burmese In my childhood, I was familiar with the story of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by reading the Illustrated Classics, and by watching Walt Disney’s Alice in Wonderland based on Alice books of Lewis Carroll, little knowing that one day I would become a writer, and would be able to read the original book of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, and translate it into Burmese. (‘Alice in Wonderland’ Classis Illustrated that my father used to read when he was 5 years old.) When I began to read the original book of Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, I already had the Master degree, and was already a writer. I liked, and enjoyed the book very much. I asked my father whether it was already translated into Burmese. It was not. My father (a mathematics professor) also said that some logic, and philosophical terms in the story were difficult to explain if you are not a mathematician. ...

A Letter To My Grandfather

( ‘It’s about to change’ said Amon; Firebender, in his famous victory speech. ‘Change’ is the word, the most affective speech which still popular among the audience. I wondered ‘Reform” might be another striking word which could hold the attention to the people.) My dear grandpa, today was the last episode of ‘The Legend of Korra’ of an American Animated Television Series showed on TV. It began since 12 days ago and today was the last episode ended. Yes, grandpa, there were only 12 episodes of the series. (Oh! Yes, I still love to watch cartoons!) After these 12 days, I have many things to tell you. That’s why I began to write a letter to you, my dear grandpa. My mind went back to the time when you and grandma taught us the play of Shakespeare’s ‘Julius Caesar’. The reader knows that the Ides of March was the doomed day of Julius Caesar. Yes, you know, Caesar’s assassination is one of the most famous scenes of the play. After the Caesar’s death, Brutus de...

100th Anniversary of Burmese Cartoon in 2015

(U Bagalay (Shwe Ta Lay) , U Hain Zun, U Ba Gyan, and U Phay Thein.) 100th Anniversary of Burmese Cartoon in 2015 Early forms of cartoons art can be seen in the cave drawing. In Burma we could see the cave drawings, or the frescoes painted on the walls of the temples from old Bagan city. Because of those drawings as ancient inscriptions, we learnt the Buddha’s life, or the ancient history of the old king. Apart from the ancient stories, the comic art, or the terms comic and comic strips started in World War II at the Rangoon Time Newspaper in English, established in 1912. Burmese Cartoon Descends From Monkey? It was because of the first cartoon appeared as celebrating Christmas at the supplementary issue of the Rangoon Time Newspaper on the Christmas day of 1912. In the cartoon, an English man with the English dress and an English woman with Burmese dress were dancing together. The cartoonist signed as ‘Monkey’ at below. At that time Burmese people called the British as ...

My Life Will Go On (33)

In my literary life, in 2008, my translated book ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in Burmese was awarded from Tun Foundation for the Children Literary Genre. At that time, I created a blog and posted my articles in Burmese as juniorwin. Still at the time, I had no intention to write in English. I dare not to write. My mother always encouraged me to write in English like my grandmother. That’s why I created a blog; juniorwin-english at the blogger.com, but I did not post a line there so far. In 2011, because of my mother’s encouragement, I started to write in English in this blog, which was created since 2008. After a year, my twin brother, Maung Yit, the editor of Moemaka.com (eng.moemaka.net) published the collection of my articles in English as ebook. (I was happy to see my ebooks altogether on pub in the Amazon Kindle bookshelf.) (Illustrated by Maung Yit) In 2015, to mark the 100th Anniversary of my grandparents U Khin Maung Latt (Chief editor of the Working People’s Daily (...

A Memory of My Grandparents…. (U) Khin Maung Latt and (Daw) Khin Myo Chit

Their Brief Stories (My grandpa with a Traditional Burmese clothes in 1958-59.) (U) Khin Maung Latt (1915 – 1996), my grandfather, was an English teacher, already looked like a teacher. On his face there was something, which reminds one of Sherlock Holmes. If he wore a long coat with a cherrywood pipe in his mouth, he would be a living image of Sherlock Holmes. He never smoked, but he had once a habit of smoking cigar. I knew because I saw him smoking in the photograph. But I was told that he gave up smoking since we were born. He did not wish my twin brother to follow his smoking habit. (My grandpa had a habit of smoking cigar, I knew because I saw him smoking in the photograph.) My grandpa was a tall man in figure with a height of 5 feet 11. His smiling lips showed his kind and sympathy. He loved to teach English grammar, essays, Shakespeare’s Plays and Bernard Shaw’s Short Stories. He had a habit of doing preparation ...
