The Night She Rest In Peace; Longing for a Burmese Poet – Kyi Aye

(Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. While I was reading her poems in my younger days, I thought Omar Khayyam was reborn as our poet, Kyi ...

A Visit to Moe-Kaung Pagoda Festival

(From the 21st December to the 31st December 2018, Moe-Kaung Pagoda Festival was held.) Moe-Kaung pagoda at Yankin township, located in the northern part of Rangoon, where the pagoda festival was held in every December. As my grandma (Khin Myo Chit) wrote, ‘Every pagoda has an annual festival.’, this month is a month of Moe-Kaung pagoda festival. The festival stayed for a week, sometimes two weeks, so people could look forward to the days of enjoyment. (The place where the Moe-Kaung pagoda stands today. Seen behind the busy road, and trees.) The locality is a busy road with daily traffic and people around. There was a large estate of Moe-Kaung monastery near the Moe-Kaung Pagoda. Monks and lay devotees always care and do maintenance for the Pagoda. The season festival on every December always takes place in the Moe-Kaung pagoda ground. So, there were trade fairs, and colourful goods from all over the country were seen in the place at the festival. (Dried-fish.) Moe-K...

A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. Practice meditation, offering flowers, candles, incenses or colorful things, or walking on the pagoda platform mostly as keeping the Shwedagon Pagoda at the right side, or praying, etc that Buddhists usually do. (Watering stupa, and mythical symbol, at the birthday corner.) When I was young, I went to the Shwedagon pagoda with my friends the time final examination finished. We prayed, and wished for what we wanted at the foot of the pagoda. Surely we were wishing to pass the examination with distinction, or with credit. (We wish everything we want at the foot of the pagoda.) Today, I was going to ...

My Life Will Go On…..

(I know my life as a writer gave me better life. My life at the University was like a fool’s paradise for spending more than 10 years with the hope of to be a tutor. I studied French language at A.F expecting a change in my fortune. But the situation did not change.) Here how my story started on….. When I became ambitious, I was attending second year in the University by the specialized subject of mathematics. Yes, I admitted that I had never had ambition before. Some friend of mind wanted to be a doctor, some wanted to be an engineer, others wanted to have good marks in high school. I had no thought of ambition in my high school years. That’s why I only got major subjects as mathematics to go to the University. My twin brother was more intelligent than me. His good marks allowed him to attend the Engineering subject at the Rangoon Institute of Technology (R.I.T). I felt ashamed of myself at the first time comparing with my brother’s education. I though...

They Died with Their Boots On! On the 15th October of 2016, the boat carrying about 300 passengers on board (the boat pecked over the legal limit), sank on 5:00 AM at Chindwon River in Burma. It was happened 10 days ago. On that day it was estimated that mostly university students, school teachers, workers, and doctors on the ferry. (Alarmed to see such unsafe transportation for the people coastline.) A report said that boat accidents are common in Burma. But people living along the nation’s coastline used to go by heavy ferry along with the system of poor maintained transport, and overcrowded vessel. They risked their life as soldiers at war. A total of 154 people were recused alive after the ferry disaster. Found 30 dead bodies by the rescuers. Sad to hear the tragic news told by the survivors lost their loved ones in the ferry crackdown. After the dreadful accident the death toll reached 100 so far, still missing bodies remained. Our Venerable Monk - Sunlun Sayadaw U Vinaya

Sunlun Sayadaw U Vinaya (1914, 5th August Wednesday - 2012 6th October Saturday) (full moon day of WahKaung 1276 in Burmese calendar - 1374) (Sayadaw at 59 years of monkhood.) Childhood Memory I remembered when we went together with our grandparents and our parents to the 7th Mile Gabaraye Sunlun Gukyaung Monastery to practice meditation under the guidance of our venerable Sayadaw U Vinaya, Sayadaw warmly welcomed children and encouraged them to practice meditation like adults. But we could not observe such a hard meditation as adults do. But we learned something about mindfulness since our childhood a little by little. When we grew older, me and my twin brother went to the Sunlun monastery by bicycles where our Sayadaw U Vinaya resided, and practiced meditation once per week. We admitted that meditation made our mind peace. Sayadaw was glad to see us when we came and took meditation under the roof of the monastery. Sayadaw suggested that we...
