U Ba Gyan, Burmese Cartoonist (1902 – 1953) U Ba Gyan was a famous Burmese cartoonist of all time. If he were still alive, he might be now a hundred and eleven years old. He was wise and learned and above all was gifted with irrespressible wit and humour. He dared to point out the way of sanity and better judgment. He always declared that he drew cartoons for the country, not for money. He never worked as government servant, because if he accepted, he believed he could not have better judgment for the country. The Night She Rest In Peace; Longing for a Burmese Poet – Kyi Aye

(Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. 100th Anniversary of Burmese Cartoon in 2015

(U Bagalay (Shwe Ta Lay) , U Hain Zun, U Ba Gyan, and U Phay Thein.) 100th Anniversary of Burmese Cartoon in 2015 Early forms of cartoons art can be seen in the cave drawing. In Burma we could see the cave drawings, or the frescoes painted on the walls of the temples from old Bagan city. Because of those drawings as ancient inscriptions, we learnt the Buddha’s life, or the ancient history of the old king. Apart from the ancient stories, the comic art, or the terms comic and comic strips started in World War II at the Rangoon Time Newspaper in English, established in 1912. Some Part of Their Life and Their Meeting (My grandparents in 1939.) My Grandfather (U) Khin Maung Latt (My grandfather with a smile.) While my grandfather was working as a clerk at Bombay Burma Company, towards the end of 1939 labour troubles grew. The workers of the Burma Oil Company, one of the leading British forms went on strikes. He took part in it although English government did not allow their government workers involved in the uprising. He was forced to quit because of his taking part in riot. Before long he joined the Workers’ Union. I always was heard from my grandpa that when he was working as a clerk in the British government company, they were not allowed the employees reading political books in the working hour. A Trip to Sit-Tway (Western Burma) (Myauk-U) Part (One)

I had a trip to Sit-Tway a year ago. Sit-Tway, is a district of the Rakhine State in western Burma. We planned to visit a town, called ‘Myauk-U’ - is a township of Myauk-U district in the Rakhine State of Burma. I have never been there before. The place was not secure for the visitors because of the Rakhine State riots. But at that time, the place Myauk-U was calm and safe. ( A beautiful view of Sit-Tway airport from the plane.) We started our trip by plane in the early afternoon for 50 minutes flying. When we arrived at sit-tway airport, a native friend welcomed us, and we all went to Myauk-U by car right away. Their Background and Their Families (My grandparents in 1954) My Grandpa – (U) Khin Maung Latt (My grandpa in 1936.) My grandfather (U) Khin Maung Latt was born in 1915, 26 th August at Monywa, Upper Burma. U Nyunt, a government officer of Bombay Burma (Teak) Company, was his father, , and Daw Khin Thwet was his mother. My grandpa had three brothers and three sisters, and he was number 6 th . My grandpa was graduated 9 th standard (middle school) from Monywa National School (1920-30), and High School from Monywa (Buddhist School) in 1931-32, first year in Mandalay University, and then moved to Rangoon University in 1933-34. A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. Practice meditation, offering flowers, candles, incenses or colorful things, or walking on the pagoda platform mostly as keeping the Shwedagon Pagoda at the right side, or praying, etc that Buddhists usually do. A Day at the Myanmar Cartoon ‘ s 100 th Anniversary (MCC hall held 100th Anniversary of Myanmar Cartoon.) The first cartoon in Burma appeared as celebrating Christmas at the supplementary issue of the Rangoon Time Newspaper in English in 1912. The cartoonist signed as ‘Monkey’ at below. In 1915, the famous Burmese cartoonist, later became father of Burmese cartoons, U Bagalay drew in Yangon (Rangoon) Time Newspaper in English. We recalled this memory and marked the Christmas season of December of this year 2015 as 100 th Anniversary of Burmese cartoons.
