A Memory Of My Okalapa Grandparents

(My maternal grandparents – Okalapa grandparents.) Grandparents from our father’s side; (U) Khin Maung Latt, and (Daw) khin Myo Chit, we called them as ‘Ba Ba Gyi’ and ‘May May Gyi’ about whom I had written a long or a short account of their life and works, just as I could remember in my life or just as I collect as possible as I could in the collection from their history. I rarely introduced to my readers with my grandparents from our mother’s side - (U) Thein Nyun(t) and (Daw) Chit Tin. A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. Practice meditation, offering flowers, candles, incenses or colorful things, or walking on the pagoda platform mostly as keeping the Shwedagon Pagoda at the right side, or praying, etc that Buddhists usually do. (Watering stupa, and mythical symbol, at the birthday corner.) When I was young, I went to the Shwedagon pagoda with my friends the time final examination finished. We prayed, and wished for what we wanted at the foot of the pagoda. Surely we were wishing to pass the examination with distinction, or with credit. Novitiation Ceremony

(Shwedagon Pagoda.) Today I went to the Shwedagon Pagoda with my aunt, and paid respect at the foot of the pagoda. Before we left I saw a long queue represented the showing of the novitiation ceremony. It was one of the traditions of giving respect. Everybody around was excited to see them, and could not help saying ‘Well done’ three times. (The first lady carried a tray of offerings; green coconuts with a long stem, bananas, Thapyay (Eugenia) leaves, and colorful things (the eternal items in all family rituals) on her head. She played a very important part in this ceremony. The tray seemed heavy! (Look at her face!) (A strong man should do it instead of her! I think.) (Girls wore, and act as county style.) Seasonal Flower in Rainy Season

(Wa-zou-ban flowers in rainy season. Very rare to see Purple colored Wahso in Rangoon.) Especially flowering in the rainy season, Wa-zou-ban (herbaceous plants) are sold every corner of the market. People love to buy them, and offered at their household shrines. Its color was mixed with white and orange. It looks like a bell, and hung beautifully by its pattern. Bearing purple blossoms was a rare to see in Rangoon, we can call it ‘country Wa-zou-ban’. (Wa-zou-bans are popular and have best attraction in the market place.) Wa-zou-bans are easy to plant in the garden. Its stem can be grown naturally in the soil. We can plant again and again their stems, and it will grow, and increase in the next rainy season, or sometimes it quickly blossoms if it gets water enough. (Easy to grow in the garden.)

(My grandparents (U) Khin Maung Latt, and Khin Myo Chit (writer) in 1965)) Houses They Lived In 1943, my grandparents stayed at 408-410 Dalousie Road, 24 Zabuyit Street, SANCHAUNG, Rangoon. I saw the address at the back-cover of the book; ‘Three Years Under the Japs’ (1945). (The cover of 'Three Years Under The Japs' 1945) During wartime, they did not have constant home. At Sanchaung, Zabuyit street where they once lived for 2 or 3 years I used to hear from them. Their 4-year old son was waiting at the veranda his parents returned from work. They had not a photo of Zabuyit house. So, I did not know how their house looked like. (Their 3-year old son waiting his parents in the late evening at Zabuyit house.) Sunlun Method of Vipassana Meditation is The Best Medicine

The experience of practicing meditation learnt from the meditation master Sunlun Sayadaw U Vinaya, changed our mind clear, and fresh. He taught us to practice meditation for total 100 minutes; 50 minutes for breathe hard, and another 50 minutes for keeping full mindfulness in pain that would happen during meditating until the time completed. Too tough for the beginner, but by the guidance of Sayadaw U Vinaya, the time seemed to pass quickly. It was different between practice meditation at home, and practice meditation at the monastery. Their Background and Their Families (My grandparents in 1954) My Grandpa – (U) Khin Maung Latt (My grandpa in 1936.) My grandfather (U) Khin Maung Latt was born in 1915, 26 th August at Monywa, Upper Burma. U Nyunt, a government officer of Bombay Burma (Teak) Company, was his father, , and Daw Khin Thwet was his mother. My grandpa had three brothers and three sisters, and he was number 6 th . Cartoon Festival in U Ba Gyan Street

U Ba Gyan, Burmese Cartoonist (1902 – 1953) U Ba Gyan was a famous Burmese cartoonist of all time. If he were still alive, he might be now a hundred and eleven years old. He was wise and learned and above all was gifted with irrespressible wit and humour. He dared to point out the way of sanity and better judgment. He always declared that he drew cartoons for the country, not for money. He never worked as government servant, because if he accepted, he believed he could not have better judgment for the country. Here, I proudly add that he and my grandparents were very friendly to each other. I was told that he always visited my grandparents’ house ‘Aye Yeik Tha’, and he often drew cartoons for my father.
