A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. The Night She Rest In Peace; Longing for a Burmese Poet – Kyi Aye

(Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. The Act of Respectful Deed

In our Burmese custom, during the Thadingyut festival, young people brought foods, or cakes or gifts, and they offered in front of their teachers or adults, and paid respect. My grandpa was a teacher, and he received gifts, and respect from his students during the season. However he accepted gifts from his students, he preferred having being paid respect at not any gifts. His students did not satisfy what their teacher said. They wanted to bring cakes or foods, etc while they were coming to pay respect. ( Yes! I agreed! Their cakes were delicious! I did not understand why grandpa did not want to accept gifts .) (Young writers, and poets came and paid respect to my grandparents during Thadingyut season.) ...

Novitiation Ceremony

(Shwedagon Pagoda.) Today I went to the Shwedagon Pagoda with my aunt, and paid respect at the foot of the pagoda. Before we left I saw a long queue represented the showing of the novitiation ceremony. It was one of the traditions of giving respect. Everybody around was excited to see them, and could not help saying ‘Well done’ three times. (The first lady carried a tray of offerings; green coconuts with a long stem, bananas, Thapyay (Eugenia) leaves, and colorful things (the eternal items in all family rituals) on her head. The Hta –ma –ne Festival (February)

It is the name given to the harvest festival at the time of the year in February, the eleventh month of the Burmese calendar. The name hta-ma-ne is given to a mixture of glutinous rice, sessamun seeds, peanuts, coconut slices, garlic slices and a generous amount of oil, etc. In fact, everything that is yielded by the harvest is put into the mixture. How the mixture is made is a separate subject. Enough to say that the hta-ma-ne party is a kind of come-one –and –come-all and take-away party. That is the true spirit of hta-ma-ne party. Their Background and Their Families (My grandparents in 1954) My Grandpa – (U) Khin Maung Latt (My grandpa in 1936.) My grandfather (U) Khin Maung Latt was born in 1915, 26 th August at Monywa, Upper Burma. U Nyunt, a government officer of Bombay Burma (Teak) Company, was his father, , and Daw Khin Thwet was his mother. My grandpa had three brothers and three sisters, and he was number 6 th . My grandpa was graduated 9 th standard (middle school) from Monywa National School (1920-30), and High School from Monywa (Buddhist School) in 1931-32, first year in Mandalay University, and then moved to Rangoon University in 1933-34. A Life-Long Partner

(1985, My loving grandparents - U Khin Maung Latt, and (Daw) Khin Myo Chit (writer)) ‘Colourful Burma’ (1976) was my grandma’s famous book in the history of all time. The book was reprinted again and again until now. She wrote traditional Burmese styles, cultural things, and Buddhism in the book. Grandma used famous phrases, words from poems, and plays from English literature. She devoured English Literature since she was young. Although grandpa was an English teacher, he could not write as grandma do. But he helped grandma, and gave assistance whenever grandma needed. (The first edition of Colourful Burma 1976 (left), and second edition of Colourful Burma 1978 (right)) In 1996, ‘Burma’ and ‘Burmese’ were no longer permitted to use in our country. Some Part of Their Life and Their Meeting (My grandparents in 1939.) My Grandfather (U) Khin Maung Latt (My grandfather with a smile.) While my grandfather was working as a clerk at Bombay Burma Company, towards the end of 1939 labour troubles grew. The workers of the Burma Oil Company, one of the leading British forms went on strikes. He took part in it although English government did not allow their government workers involved in the uprising. He was forced to quit because of his taking part in riot. Before long he joined the Workers’ Union.
