(Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. U Ba Gyan, Burmese Cartoonist (1902 – 1953) U Ba Gyan was a famous Burmese cartoonist of all time. If he were still alive, he might be now a hundred and eleven years old. He was wise and learned and above all was gifted with irrespressible wit and humour. He dared to point out the way of sanity and better judgment. He always declared that he drew cartoons for the country, not for money. He never worked as government servant, because if he accepted, he believed he could not have better judgment for the country. Here, I proudly add that he and my grandparents were very friendly to each other. I was told that he always visited my grandparents’ house ‘Aye Yeik Tha’, and he often drew cartoons for my father. Here is the biography of my grandfather – U Khin Maung Latt English teacher and Writer (1915 – 1996) There was already mentioned about him in the biography of my grandmother in the previous post. So I want to add as he always loved to teach and he had been an English teacher for the rest of his life. He was very patient with his students. On his life time, there were three books published. Two of them were about English language as 'Current Essays' and 'Everyday Expressions in English'. On the third one , my grandparents wrote together on the subject of 'English language' and 'Reading Books' in Burmese. He also wrote many articles about his experience of teaching. He and my grandmother worked as an editor of the Family' magazine called 'Pyaw Taw Zat' in 1965 for one year. A Visit to Moe-Kaung Pagoda Festival

(From the 21st December to the 31st December 2018, Moe-Kaung Pagoda Festival was held.) Moe-Kaung pagoda at Yankin township, located in the northern part of Rangoon, where the pagoda festival was held in every December. As my grandma (Khin Myo Chit) wrote, ‘Every pagoda has an annual festival.’, this month is a month of Moe-Kaung pagoda festival. The festival stayed for a week, sometimes two weeks, so people could look forward to the days of enjoyment. (The place where the Moe-Kaung pagoda stands today. Seen behind the busy road, and trees.) The locality is a busy road with daily traffic and people around. There was a large estate of Moe-Kaung monastery near the Moe-Kaung Pagoda. Monks and lay devotees always care and do maintenance for the Pagoda. The season festival on every December always takes place in the Moe-Kaung pagoda ground. There happened student riots because of withdrawing kyats 25, 35, and 75 notes from circulation on September 1987. To avoid them bigger, Universities were closed for a while. At that time we had not finished the final examination. There were six or seven including two major subjects remained to sit. I remembered it was a difficult time for us. A few months later, we were back to sit the remaining subjects at the Hlaing Campus. As I told before, I was allowed to attend the Honors because of having distinctions in two major subjects.
