Sunlun Sayadaw U Vinaya (1914, 5th August Wednesday - 2012 6th October Saturday) (full moon day of WahKaung 1276 in Burmese calendar - 1374) (Sayadaw at 59 years of monkhood.) Childhood Memory I remembered when we went together with our grandparents and our parents to the 7th Mile Gabaraye Sunlun Gukyaung Monastery to practice meditation under the guidance of our venerable Sayadaw U Vinaya, Sayadaw warmly welcomed children and encouraged them to practice meditation like adults. But we could not observe such a hard meditation as adults do. But we learned something about mindfulness since our childhood a little by little. When we grew older, me and my twin brother went to the Sunlun monastery by bicycles where our Sayadaw U Vinaya resided, and practiced meditation once per week. A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. Practice meditation, offering flowers, candles, incenses or colorful things, or walking on the pagoda platform mostly as keeping the Shwedagon Pagoda at the right side, or praying, etc that Buddhists usually do. (Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. Novitiation Ceremony

(Shwedagon Pagoda.) Today I went to the Shwedagon Pagoda with my aunt, and paid respect at the foot of the pagoda. Before we left I saw a long queue represented the showing of the novitiation ceremony. It was one of the traditions of giving respect. Everybody around was excited to see them, and could not help saying ‘Well done’ three times. (The first lady carried a tray of offerings; green coconuts with a long stem, bananas, Thapyay (Eugenia) leaves, and colorful things (the eternal items in all family rituals) on her head. She played a very important part in this ceremony. The tray seemed heavy! (Look at her face!) (A strong man should do it instead of her! I think.) (Girls wore, and act as county style.) A Journey To Myingyan (Upper Burma) – Part 1

(Photo- Under the pagoda, at the place Myingyan Sunlun Sayadaw whose body still lay, more than sixty years ago in the Sunlun Monastery of Myingyan.) The Adventure of My Book Reading - I Am Reading Encyclopedia

A Present from My Grandmother When I was 10 (The old copy of The Modern Encyclopedia for Children.) The old edition of The Modern Encyclopedia for Children (1966) that our grandmother (Khin Myo Chit – writer of Colourful Burma, etc) gave to her twins grandchildren when they were 10. Her own handwriting on the first page brought me back to the memory of our childhood. The book was a huge book, and it seemed difficult for ten-year-old children. But at that time the twins could read this book by the help of their grandparents, and their parents. They taught us how to read the dictionary of Encyclopedia. Our granny showed the pictures inside of the book, and explained everything what we asked. It was a long time ago. We are only 10 when our granny gave this old edition of The Modern Encyclopedia for Children. My grandma, Khin Myo Chit – writer of Colourful Burma- wrote ‘Will you ever know what you have lost?’ at the Working People’s Daily newspaper in the July of 1975 about the severe earthquake that destroyed many of the old pagodas of Pagan. In the article, she lettered to her grandchildren that she was so unhappy for hearing the news of the earthquake strike at Pagan where she was dreaming of taking her twins-grandchildren to enjoy the historical place of Pagan. The earthquake so happened at the evening of 6:35 PM on the 7th May of 1975. She always said to me that her great grandfather, great scholar, and archaeologist, taught her to love Pagan. (Burmese Kankaw tree. High, and difficult to pick their flowers.) There were two kinds of Kan Kaw (Mesua Ferra) trees; Burmese Kan Kaw, and Thai Kan Kaw. Burmese Kan Kaw bloomed on the summer season. They liked hot, and dried weather. They were a kind of tall trees. During the summer season, their flowers flourished beautifully on the whole. (I plant Mesua Ferra tree in front of my house, near Household shrine.) Thai Kan Kaw bloomed all the season. Its height was not as tall as the Burmese Kan Kaw. I planted Thai Kan Kaw in my garden, because I wanted to see Kan Kaw flowers in every season. Both liked sun light, and water. This tree I have planted for more than a year ago. I bought it at the market. Its height was about 3 feet, and it had already 6 or 7 buds. These buds attracted me so much. The seller said they would bloom in a week.
