A Day at the Monastery or Sayadaw U Vinaya's 101th Birthday

(A statue honoured Sayadaw U Vinaya, seemed a real Sayadaw looking at us.) Today was the 30 th of August 2015, the full moon day of Wah-khaung in Burmese calendar. It was the day Sayaday U Vinaya’s 101th birthday. The ceremony for Sayadaw’s bd was held at Sunlun Meditation Monastery at 7 th miles. I was told that there were 15 monks attended the ceremony, and people could donate anything they wished to the monk. Some prepared 15 yellow robes, or towels, or medicines, or books, or kyat-notes, or etc. I was happy to think what I was going to offer on that day. Finally I was decided offering my book “A Memory of My Grandparents” to each of the monks at Sunlun monastery. In the early morning of 6:00 A.M, people were waiting at the hall in the Sunlun monastery. I seem to be always writing about myself, my dear readers? I hope someone who may read what I write will understand that these adventures contain a great deal about me. I would have you to know that since I was a little girl indeed, I seldom dared to open my heart to anybody else except to my readers. (Illustration - Maung Yit) Each year during the water festival which welcomes the Burmese New Year which falls on the 2 nd week of April every year, we make the Thingyan Pot or we called it ‘A Tar Pot’. Draw A Line For the 2021 New Year

We still lived under the Stay-at-home order since 8th September 2020. Last night I heard the night curfew announcement between 12PM and 4AM from 28th December to 28th February in our township. No public gatherings will be allowed for the New Year too. The government announced that people would held the New Year celebrations at their homes with their families. Although the cases became lower than 5% since the last few days, the country was not surely safe yet. (I was still afraid of listening the announcement at night. It would never end?) Finally the 2020 comes to an end after beating the world severely and miserably. People might expect to see the world more peaceful, and healthy again. Now the new year is coming soon. Yes, I am still in one piece! We have been waiting 365 days for this year to end. (Happy New Year 2021!) (Cartoon by Maung Yit.)

The Hta –ma –ne Festival (February)

It is the name given to the harvest festival at the time of the year in February, the eleventh month of the Burmese calendar. The name hta-ma-ne is given to a mixture of glutinous rice, sessamun seeds, peanuts, coconut slices, garlic slices and a generous amount of oil, etc. In fact, everything that is yielded by the harvest is put into the mixture. How the mixture is made is a separate subject. Enough to say that the hta-ma-ne party is a kind of come-one –and –come-all and take-away party. That is the true spirit of hta-ma-ne party. Everyone is invited and those not invited can come too. I received a portion of hta-ma-ne from the ‘Three Pagodas Monastery’ of our neighbor street. They distributed their hta-ma-nes all their neighbors on the full moon day of Ta-po-dwe (February). I was about to go there, and took some video of their day-work of Hta-ma-ne making. Here is the biography of my grandfather – U Khin Maung Latt English teacher and Writer (1915 – 1996) There was already mentioned about him in the biography of my grandmother in the previous post. So I want to add as he always loved to teach and he had been an English teacher for the rest of his life. He was very patient with his students. On his life time, there were three books published. Two of them were about English language as 'Current Essays' and 'Everyday Expressions in English'. On the third one , my grandparents wrote together on the subject of 'English language' and 'Reading Books' in Burmese. He also wrote many articles about his experience of teaching. He and my grandmother worked as an editor of the Family' magazine called 'Pyaw Taw Zat' in 1965 for one year. Sequel; Do What We Like

(My grandparents - U Khin Maung Latt, and Khin Myo Chit (writer) in 1930?) My grandparents always told us about their wartime life, and how they struggled in hard time. I listened what they said to us, but I had no intention to take a note, or kept in my memory. I thought those things were not important to me. When my grandpa passed away, I stayed near grandma most of the time, and read some novels or poems that grandma wanted to hear. Grandma recalled the memory of grandpa when they had a free, and struggled life. At that time, I was starting to write some article at the magazine in Burmese. I had an idea that writing about them in my article seemed interesting. Luckily, I had a chance to ask my grandma in detail, and noted down at my book. Grandpa chose his education rather than his work at the government office. When he worked at the Civil Supplied Office, and his salary increased to 500 kyats, he quit from the work for the reason that he did not have much time to study. H
