A Visit To The Shwedagon Pagoda

(Still crowded, and crowded at the pagoda platform whether it rained heavily or under the bad weather.) People visited to the Shwedagon Pagoda frequently. Paying respect at the foot of the pagoda is one of the ways of Buddhist life. People crowded at the Pagoda platform every time we visited. Practice meditation, offering flowers, candles, incenses or colorful things, or walking on the pagoda platform mostly as keeping the Shwedagon Pagoda at the right side, or praying, etc that Buddhists usually do. (Watering stupa, and mythical symbol, at the birthday corner.) When I was young, I went to the Shwedagon pagoda with my friends the time final examination finished. We prayed, and wished for what we wanted at the foot of the pagoda. Surely we were wishing to pass the examination with distinction, or with credit. Cartoon Festival in U Ba Gyan Street

U Ba Gyan, Burmese Cartoonist (1902 – 1953) U Ba Gyan was a famous Burmese cartoonist of all time. If he were still alive, he might be now a hundred and eleven years old. He was wise and learned and above all was gifted with irrespressible wit and humour. He dared to point out the way of sanity and better judgment. He always declared that he drew cartoons for the country, not for money. He never worked as government servant, because if he accepted, he believed he could not have better judgment for the country. Here, I proudly add that he and my grandparents were very friendly to each other. I was told that he always visited my grandparents’ house ‘Aye Yeik Tha’, and he often drew cartoons for my father. My father said U Ba Gyan taught him how to draw cartoons by drawing left or right hand side of the face and remaining of it was for my father to draw. A trip to Myauk Oo (Sit-Tway) Part (Seven)

The next visit for today was going to the Museum of Archaeology. But unluckily, it was closed in the evening. We are late. (Museum of Archaeology) But wandering around the museum, there were many interesting things awaited. The wall far from us was seen as exciting. These might be the remaining of old history. (The great wall and her open gate!) Myoma Market was also closed. We were late again! (Myoma Market) Here we met some girls sold their 'glutinous rolls' near the market. These things we had seen in Yangon were tall bamboo sticks. Inside them the hollow of the sticky glutinous rice which was in the cylindrical form baked on open fire in their containers. But we had never seen such thin black dark bamboo sticks before. The seller peeled off the bamboo strips carefully and drew the lovely cylinder of delicious glutinous rice from it. A Visit to Moe-Kaung Pagoda Festival

(From the 21st December to the 31st December 2018, Moe-Kaung Pagoda Festival was held.) Moe-Kaung pagoda at Yankin township, located in the northern part of Rangoon, where the pagoda festival was held in every December. As my grandma (Khin Myo Chit) wrote, ‘Every pagoda has an annual festival.’, this month is a month of Moe-Kaung pagoda festival. The festival stayed for a week, sometimes two weeks, so people could look forward to the days of enjoyment. (The place where the Moe-Kaung pagoda stands today. Seen behind the busy road, and trees.) The locality is a busy road with daily traffic and people around. There was a large estate of Moe-Kaung monastery near the Moe-Kaung Pagoda. Monks and lay devotees always care and do maintenance for the Pagoda. The season festival on every December always takes place in the Moe-Kaung pagoda ground. So, there were trade fairs, and colourful goods from all over the country were seen in the place at the festival. (Dried-fish.) Moe-K

The Night She Rest In Peace; Longing for a Burmese Poet – Kyi Aye

(Kyi Aye (13th December 1929 – 2016)) (A photo of Kyi Aye (left), and the sketch of her (right), the artist – unknown) A very rare woman poet in Burma, Kyi Aye, an old friend of my grandparents, once lived together at Aye-Yeik-Tha in the year around 1950. She was at that time, a Rangoon University student attending a bachelor of arts. She later studied at University of Medicine, and became a doctor. My grandma and she were closed friends. Grandma admired her because of her strong ambition in the education, and her beautiful literary works and her own successful household life with 8 children (including a pair of twins.). Grandma and she discussed about literature for a long time until she left Burma (1970?). Kyi Aye had been already writing poems and romance since her high school. Her romantic poems were famous for not only her writings, but also for the artistic feelings themselves. Novitiation Ceremony

(Shwedagon Pagoda.) Today I went to the Shwedagon Pagoda with my aunt, and paid respect at the foot of the pagoda. Before we left I saw a long queue represented the showing of the novitiation ceremony. It was one of the traditions of giving respect. Everybody around was excited to see them, and could not help saying ‘Well done’ three times. (The first lady carried a tray of offerings; green coconuts with a long stem, bananas, Thapyay (Eugenia) leaves, and colorful things (the eternal items in all family rituals) on her head. She played a very important part in this ceremony. The tray seemed heavy! (Look at her face!) (A strong man should do it instead of her! I think.) (Girls wore, and act as county style.) Book Review – ‘Quest for Peace’ by Khin Myo Chit

--> The collection of Khin Myo Chit’s articles from The Working People’s Daily newspaper in 1964 was now published from Parami publication. This is the first time publication in book form, of one of Khin Myo Chit’s masterpieces. Buddhist’s way of life, memoirs on Sunlun method of meditation, her life story in literary and in wartime, her social life included in this book, and it seemed become her own autobiography. There were 49 articles appeared, and her son, Dr.Khin Maung Win wrote the Preface for the book. It said that before the title ‘Quest for Peace’ was decided, there have been many titles. Her two admirers U Win Pe (Mya Zin), and Mrs Godwine argued between the two titles called ‘Many a House of life Hath Me’ and ‘House of Life’. But they thought those two titles should need explaination. So the simple title, ‘Quest for Peace’ was finally chosen, and the autobiography was serialized in the daily newspaper The Working People’s Daily in 1964. Here is the

A Trip to Sit-Tway (Western Burma) Part (3)

(A breakfast the hotel served us was great!) After having breakfast at the hotel, we were walking nearby and had a very nice view around. Then we returned to the place we rest and prepared for seeing the town. Paying respect the famous pagodas was our purpose of the journey. The car was ready outside to take us for a ride. (I looked back to the road we left behind, " country road, take me home ".) (The chart tells you which pagodas we must start to pay respect.) A native said that there the most sacred pagodas (including Mahamyatmuni Buddha Image) at Rakhine State which represented the Buddha’s Sacred Images, most of them were at Myauk-Oo, we should not miss paying respect.
