This monthly magazine was only published for 10-12 months in Burma
from 1971september to 1972 june(?). It was published by U Than Htut,
our grandparents' closed friend. The editor was our grandmother. Their
companions helped and joined it. 'Reading for pleasure' was their
slogan.
The publisher was rich. But he wanted to use his money to publish the
magazine for children. He trusted his friends. The artist U Ba Kyi
drew the cover of the magazine. He never took his payment fully from
the editor because he knew that the magazine was not popular among
readers. U Ba Kyi was very well-known and famous artist in Burma. But
he never considered the money. Our grandparents also wrote articles in
the magazine. They all did their works with happiness. They also did
not take their fees fully. They all knew that the magazine was not
well-liked and the publisher lose his money every month. But all the
companions were happy of their works. They did not care for money.
They all did it with happiness.
He was very famous artist in Burma. He drew cover of the magazine
monthly. U Ba Kyi watched carefully all the articles, cartoons or any
writing for the magazine before they were published. He read all of
them and considered what to draw. He was drawing the cover with some
characters or some information of the articles inside. So the readers
knew easily by seeing the cover which subjects were within.
U Ba Kyi, Kyaw Sein and Tin Win were permanent artists or cartoonists
in the magazine. They drew serial or one-page cartoon every month.
Some of them gave English lessons to the readers. Some were
literatures including Shakespeare' plays. Their drawings were
excellent. They gave all of their talents in them. My grandmother
translated some Shakespeare' plays as Mid Summer Night Dream, Merchant
of Venice, Macbeth, etc into Burmese and U Ba Kyi drew it.
The magazine had been appeared for few months. But it lost a lot of
money for the publisher. But they never lose heart. They were happy
after seeing the magazine come out. Their dream would be fulfilled one
day. They went on their works with delight.
Come True?
The readers at first did not notice this magazine. They just saw it
and some tried to taste it. They never thought it was published by
some spirited writers and artists. After 8 months or 9 months passed,
the readers recognized the magazine and they considered to buy it for
their interest. Some were collecting and kept them in their library.
Some of the readers tried to buy the back copies. It seemed to be on
the way to success.
After receiving recognition from the readers, the 'PyawDawZet' family
magazine was stopped because of some publication law which I still do
not understand.
We were children when the 'PyawDawZet' magazine was born. But I saw
the old magazines from my grandparents and my parents. We loved to
read them very much. I saw the illustrations of UBaKyi, UTinWin and
UKyawSein. They drew very beautifully. I also saw the English lessons
by my grandfather. I also found some interesting science articles in
the magazine. There were only 45 or 50 pages. But it gave many
knowledge to the readers. I saw the articles written by Burmese
scholars including U KoKoGyi, thakinTheinPhay, MinThuShein, etc We
were happy to read their articles and also happy to see the pictures,
cartoons, illustrations including beautiful covers. I am not the only
one who did not forget, some young people still remember and talk
about it. Some kept them for a long time in their library. Some were
still buying them when they saw in the old book shops. The name
'PyawTawZet' was still in the heart of some of the readers and
remember ever.

Our closed friends still called my twin brother 'PyoneCho' and me,
'BoakBoak', our childhood names. You also see the logo of 'PyawTawZet'
family magazine in Burmese at the front line.)
